Sell accessories on the Shopify product page
How to show the right accessories on a Shopify product page so shoppers add them to cart without leaving the product.
Related products are more of the same: another color, an alternative, something in the same category. Accessories are what finishes the purchase. The frame for the print, the bag for the shoes, the filter for the machine. If they live in a collection three clicks away, few people buy them. They belong on the product page, with a price, and they should be able to go into the cart with the main product.
Three ways to do it
You can hard-code a set in the theme. That works until the catalog changes and only a developer can update it. You can use Shopify’s recommendations, which are good at “others also saw” and bad at “this machine needs these three filters”. Or you can set rules: this product, this collection, and a default set when nothing else matches.
What the widget has to do
- Show a few right products. Not a carousel of everything.
- Let the shopper pick one or several and change quantity.
- Add the accessories to cart with the product, so they do not open each item on its own.
- Follow the theme’s type, so it does not look like a foreign box.
- Have a fallback, so new products are not empty while you are missing a rule.
Discounts and products often bought together
A bundle discount makes sense when the accessories are a real kit. Not when you just want the cart total up. Set it so it applies only once the shopper has selected enough parts. Automatic suggestions from past orders can fill gaps, but they must not override a rule you set on purpose. A kettle should not suggest a random bestseller just because it sells.
The rules should not live in the theme file
The next theme change deletes whatever only exists in Liquid. A theme app block on the product template, with the rules in an app, is the shape that survives. That is how Smart Product Accessories is built: a rule per product, per collection, or for the whole catalog, a list or a carousel, and on Pro a bundle discount plus suggestions from products often bought together. The app is in the Shopify App Store.
If accessories differ from product to product, start with ten products that already sell and set rules there. You learn more from that than from turning an automatic module on for the whole catalog. If the widget is part of a larger store, we take it on as store work. If the real choice is a private integration, that sits under app or theme.
Short answers
- Can the theme just show a list from a metafield?
- Yes, for a small and stable catalog. The moment someone other than a developer has to update rules per collection, and the cart has to take several items in one click, you are past what a metafield is good at.
- Does it slow the product page down?
- A block that loads a small set is cheap. A script from three upsell apps on the same page is not. Pick one.
- Should accessories be a Shopify bundle?
- Not necessarily. A bundle is one product at one price. Accessories are extra lines in the cart. Use a bundle when you sell a fixed kit. Use accessories when the shopper should choose the parts.
